Project consisted of replacement of an existing 81’ x 20’ steel I-beam bridge with a custom designed 145’ x 32’ continuous concrete slab (CCS) bridge including a decorative concrete railing and overhead lighting. Research was done to find an aesthetic concrete barrier that was crash approved. The result was the “Texas Classic Traffic Railing”-the first of its kind to be used in Iowa. In addition, decorative lights similar to the existing were incorporated into the design, providing a very attractive bridge. This bridge was awarded the Iowa Quality Initiative Structures Award for the best Cast-in-Place Concrete Slab Bridge on the Local Road System constructed in the State of Iowa in 1999.
